FAQs

    General

Yes. In the UK, anyone under the age of 18 can’t legally use a sunbed or go into a restricted area of a UV tanning salon.

Under 18s are the only people who legally can’t use sunbeds, but there are also recommendations for other groups of people. It’s not recommended to use a sunbed if you’re pregnant, you have very light skin and/or a lot of moles, or if you have a history of skin cancer in your family.

If you’re pregnant and you’re worried that your minutes will expire, please let a member of our team know. We can hold all minutes until you’re able to tan with us again!

All of our new customers need to bring ID, even if you’ve signed up online. If you’re over 25, a bank card or utility bill is acceptable as ID for this. If you’re lucky enough to look under 25, however, we’ll ask to see photographic ID, so we would encourage customers to carry this ID when using our facilities even if they’re over 18.

We accept the following types of ID:

    • Passport
    • Driving Licence
    • Overseas Identity Card
    • Military ID Card
    • Citizen card

After you’re back from your holiday, we advise keeping up with your recommended 1-2 sessions per week, and always tan for recommended exposure time only. This will help your holiday tan last as long as possible.

It’s so important to keep your skin hydrated, so using an indoor tanning lotion is essential – this will help to maintain your colour and keep your skin moisturised.

Moisturising in between each tanning session with a tan extending lotion like Saltwater Sundays will help you to maintain your tan – dry skin sheds much quicker, resulting in a tan that’ll fade sooner.

Our sunbeds contain “tubes” that emit UVA and UVB light. This light – with the help of our tanning lotions – stimulates melanin, your skin’s pigment. This is how they tan you.

All of our sunbeds also come with LED red beauty lights, which offer skincare benefits alongside tanning.

Find out more about our sunbeds.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach to tanning. Our skin is so unique and everybody tans differently, so don’t be discouraged if you don’t tan immediately.

As a general rule, we recommend 8-10 sessions in your first two weeks to help build your perfect tan – but you might need more or less than this depending on your skin.

When it comes to a lasting tan, there are things you can do to extend the life of your bronzed glow. Using a sunbed once or twice a week is key to keeping up your tan – but make sure you don’t go over your recommended exposure time. You want a long-lasting glow, not a burn!

Prepping your skin is crucial to a long-lasting tan, so we recommend:

    • Exfoliating the day before to remove any dead skin cells
    • Using a lotion for every tanning session – this will speed up and deepen your tan
    • Moisturising daily to keep your skin hydrated

Kwik Tan is the place to be for responsible, innovative tanning and gorgeously bronzed skin.

We’ve been giving our customers flawless tans for over 20 years now, and we’re always investing in the latest tanning innovations, so you can trust us to give you the best glow possible. Our sunbeds use hybrid tanning technology, meaning they deliver health benefits as well as a deep tan.

We’re committed to responsible tanning, and we’re proud to be a member of The Sunbed Association – so you know you’re in good hands with us.

If all that wasn’t enough, we have the friendliest and most knowledgeable people in our tanning salons – they’ll give you tanning advice and help you with anything you need.

Yes, sunbeds can help your body produce vitamin D. The UVB light from many sunbeds mimics natural sunlight, so your body uses it to make vitamin D in the same way.

Vitamin D is really important and has a lot of benefits, including:

    • Regulating our mood, reducing depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
    • Keeping our bones strong and healthy
    • Boosting our energy levels

Without vitamin D, we can be prone to fatigue, aches and pains, and bone fractures.

We should get our vitamin D from multiple sources, so while sunbeds can help your body produce it, natural sunlight and eating foods rich in vitamin D are also recommended.

In the UK, we’re deficient in vitamin D between October and March, so using a sunbed a couple of times a week can help you get enough of it in the winter.

There are no set rules on what to wear and what not to wear – it’s all about what you feel comfortable with. Some of our customers choose to keep their underwear on, and others prefer to tan naked. All of our sunbeds come in private rooms, so whichever option you choose, you can be comfortable in the knowledge that nobody will walk in on you!

There’s no one best sunbed – the sunbed you choose is down to your own personal preferences. Some people prefer to stand while they tan, while others like the more relaxing experience of using lie-down beds. Across most of our salons, we offer a range of both stand-up and lie-down sunbeds.

Our Power Tower stand-up units are exclusive to Kwik Tan. These units deliver 360o tanning, with grab rails for easy access and to make sure all those hard-to-reach areas get a golden tan.

We have a wide range of lie-down sunbeds that all come with their own benefits, including Ergoline, Mega Sun, Q10, and Luxura sunbeds.

Find out more about our different sunbeds

Uneven tanning can happen for a number of reasons.

If you prefer the experience of a lie-down sunbed, you’ll need to shift your weight from time to time to avoid white patches caused by pressure points.

If you have freckles, they contain more pigmentation than the rest of your skin, so they’ll become darkest when you’re tanning.

Dry skin is a key cause of tanning unevenly, so keep your skin moisturised and invest in an indoor tanning lotion to keep your skin hydrated. Many of our tanning lotions are designed for dry skin, including:

    • Body Butter Karat Hybrid
    • Karat Original
    • Australian Gold Extreme

Your face can sometimes be difficult to tan as it has less melanin due to the extra sebaceous glands. Many of our sunbeds come with specialist facial tanners to make sure your face is just as glowing and tanned as the rest of you!

Our sunbeds with facial tanners include:

    • Ergoline Affinity 700
    • Ergoline Prestige 1600
    • megaSun 7800 Hybrid
    • megaSun P9 Series
    • Luxura X7
    • Q10 Ultrasun

    Lotions and Accelerators

Yes! We can’t shout yes loud enough.

Tanning lotions are essential to getting a gorgeously deep, long-lasting tan quickly. They contain ingredients such as tyrosine that help your skin to tan better, faster, and deeper. They do this by bringing melanin, the skin’s pigment, to your skin’s surface – we call this ‘fast tan mode’.

If there’s not enough melanin on your skin’s surface when you use a sunbed, the colour won’t develop as deeply or effectively – so you’re not getting much value for money.

Tanning lotions also hydrate your skin, which is essential to making your tan last longer – dry skin sheds, which equals a tan that fades fast.

There are four types of tanning lotions:

    • Tan accelerators
    • Bronzers
    • Tingle creams
    • Tan extenders

Tanning lotions also come with extra benefits depending on which one you choose. They can help you fight ageing, soothe skin conditions, reduce cellulite, and even protect tattoos!

Find out more about each type of tanning lotion and view our range

We offer a range of different tanning lotions, all suited to different skin tones and conditions. They’re available in four different types:

    • Tan accelerators
    • Bronzers
    • Tingle creams
    • Tan extenders

Bronzers will offer you an instant dark colour, while pigment-free tan accelerators sometimes give you a darker tan in the long run.

That all depends on the results you’re looking for!

Some sunbed creams will deliver a darker colour than others, but you might want to choose a tan accelerator based on your skin type.

Some tanning lotions will hydrate dry skin and even soothe skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis. So if your skin is especially dry or you find that you don’t tan evenly, these lotions will give you the best results.

    Hydrating tanning lotions:

    • Body Butter Karat Hybrid
    • Karat Original
    • Australian Gold Extreme

If anti-ageing is important to you, we carry a range of tan accelerators that are boosted with some of the most powerful anti-ageing ingredients around.

    Anti-ageing tanning lotions:

    • Australian Gold Rapid Tan Intensifier
    • Go to Black tanning lotion
    • Devoted Creations H.I.M Fit

    Responsible Tanning

A lot of our customers find that using our sunbeds with red light therapy can help ease arthritis pain. Red light therapy has been found to reduce the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis.

The UVB light from our sunbeds can also help with arthritis symptoms. That’s because UVB light can help your body produce vitamin D, which is essential to preventing the thinning of your bones.

Studies have suggested that red and infrared light therapy can reduce osteoarthritis pain by over 50%.

We strongly advise against this – after you’ve used a sunbed, you should wait at least 24 hours before sunbathing.

There’s no conclusive evidence that using a sunbed will harm your unborn baby, but your skin can become more sensitive while pregnant. Therefore, we prohibit the use of our facilities to anyone who is or could be pregnant.

Some evidence has shown that the UVB lights from sunbeds can help treat psoriasis.

As well as light therapy, many of our tanning lotions are formulated with ingredients that can help treat psoriasis.

A lot of evidence suggests that sunbeds can soothe eczema by reducing skin inflammation.

UV light helps your body to produce anti-inflammatory cells, which can relax an overactive immune system – thought to be the cause of eczema.

We also have tanning lotions that come with ingredients designed specifically to soothe eczema – so by using both, you can get the best results!

The best tanning lotions for eczema:

    • Australian Gold Rapid Tan Intensifier
    • Body Butter Karat Original
    • Body Butter Karat Hybrid
    • Saltwater Sundays

You should wear eye protection that meets EU standards every time you tan with us. Your eyes, as well as the skin around them, are especially sensitive to UV light, so they need to be protected. We have reusable and disposable goggles for purchase in all our salons, and we can offer goggles on loan at each of our salons.

There’s evidence that the UV light from sunbeds can help reduce acne.

UV light helps to reduce redness and swelling in skin, which can, in turn, calm down inflammatory acne.

Some of our sunbeds also come with patented technology that helps your body produce vitamin D – and research shows that vitamin D can help prevent acne too.

As for acne scarring, red light therapy can help to reduce the appearance of scars. The good news is that we offer red light therapy at all our salons!

Legally, anyone using a sunbed needs to be 18.  At Kwik Tan, our salon staff use the challenge 25 policy, so anyone who looks under 25 years of age should bring photographic ID when they come to tan. Take it as a glowing compliment!

0.3 refers to the maximum legal UV output of the tubes inside sunbeds. This is the same UV output as the Mediterranean Sun at midday.

All tanning salon sunbeds need to be 0.3-compliant to make sure customers are tanning in the most responsible way. The results of using 0.3-compliant tubes are a deeper, darker, longer-lasting tan!

All of our sunbeds are 0.3-compliant, and we’re fully committed to responsible tanning.
